Westminster Abbey Statues

Description of Project

During the cleaning and restoration of the Western Towers of Westminster Abbey the architect and surveyor of the fabric, Donald Butress, was keen to add something new to the facade. Empty niches on the buttresses flanking the porch cried out to be filled and as head carver on the project I was asked to design and complete six new statues. These were my first attempts at figurative sculpture and I produced small scale maquettes and full-size portrait studies as a guide to the carving. The success of these figures led to the later commission of the Four Virtues, installed in the four lower niches of the West Porch as part of the Modern Martyrs project which completed the cycle of new statuary on the West Front. I was responsible for the design of all 20 figures, and carved ten personally.
