Christ’s College Gatehouse Carvings

Christs College Gatehouse Carvings

Description of Project

This small project is an example of an all too rare opportunity to introduce carved ornament into a contemporary building.

The development by Christs College in 1985 cloaked the notorious eyesore of the back of the concrete Lasdun building, using a mixture of brick and stone which respected the urban texture of King Street. The design of the new rear entrance to the college referenced the late medieval gatehouse to the front, and included panels of heraldic ornament. These were designed in a contemporary style suited to the new building, and included details of the arms of the foundress, Margaret Beaufort.
