Globe Theatre, London

Description of Project

The Globe Theatre in Southwark is famed as the recreation of the theatre Shakespeare knew. Few people are aware that the site also houses a recreation of the Phoenix theatre, designed by Inigo Jones, the architect who introduced Palladian Classicism into England. Constructed in brick with Portland stone dressings, this distinctive building also featured a pediment with an ornamental cartouche. Sketchy pen indications by Jones exist giving a rough indication of its appearance, and these formed the basis of my design, scale modelled in clay for approval by the architects before production in stone.
