Winchester College – Angel Gabriel

Description of Project

Winchester College was built by William Wykham, the most powerful churchman of the late 15th century. His foundation of the college established a  pattern of collegiate planning that influenced the shape of institutional and aristocratic building for centuries.

The gatehouses to the college incorporated a number of religious sculptures, and included his own image as the donor. The trio of figures on the inner gateway of the college is an Annunciation scene, depicting the visit of the Angel Gabriel before the birth of Christ. The Angel  statue was removed to the safety of the museum to halt serious deterioration, and an anonymous donor provided the means to commission a restoration to fill the empty niche.
