At her death in 2002, the Queen Mother was pre-deceased by her husband George VI by 50 years. The decision was made to create a memorial to her by remodelling and enlarging the pre-existing monument to George VI. This was designed by Donald Butress, Surveyor Emeritus to Westminster Abbey, with the participation of H.R.H. The Prince of Wales. New bronzes were commissioned in the form of a statue by Philip Jackson and reliefs by Paul Day. Further sculpture was required in the form of heraldic armorials for the pedestals of both figures, and wreathed cipher panels, all in Portland Stone. This was the part of the project with which I was concerned.
