King’s College Chapel was one of the last major medieval buildings finished before the Renaissance. The West Door was completed by 1519 in the reign of Henry VIII.
Two niches flank the door, with elaborate four stage hexagonal canopies. These were entirely renewed, along with the two heraldic supporters, and the intricate crowned Tudor roses within the soffit moulding of the arch. The Jackdaw Crag Magnesian Limestone, selected to match the original stone of the building, was ideal for the fine detail and deep undercutting of the ornament, which was a challenge and a joy to carve.
